Read the account description first
Keep the complete letter and identify the tax matter and reporting period it names. Compare that information with the records actually held. A notice associated with a business should not be silently assigned to the owner’s personal return because the names are related. The relevant filing and entity facts need examination to understand the obligation.
Avoid classification by the business label
An LLC designation alone does not answer every federal tax-treatment question. Describe the actual account and available filing information rather than choosing a conclusion from the name. Note uncertainty for review. Current official business-tax guidance supplies context, while the circumstances and applicable requirements determine how the specific account question should be addressed.
Define the proposed review
Ask which records would clarify the tax type, period, and balance explanation. Understand whether the work concerns a notice response, return matter, transaction review, or payment question. Covered tasks and responsibilities should be clear before authorization. A general account chart helps identify questions but does not certify classification, filing status, or resolution of the amount shown on the letter.
